PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate knowledge of the theories and models from the CMI Managing a Team to Achieve Results unit; along with establishing your knowledge and understanding of being able to communicate effectively and overcome barriers to achievement. You will also demonstrate your knowledge of managing a high performing team through a cohesive approach to leadership. The assignment comprises of several tasks, each aligned to the CMI (Chartered Management Institute) Level 3 certificate. Please refer to the assessment criteria to aid you in answering the following tasks.

Note: Although there will be a suggestive range of models and theories within your assignment for you to choose from; it is not a requirement to cover all of these when completing the assessment. You are encouraged to select and present appropriate information, models/theories and examples that support your answer to evidence that you sufficiently understand the assessment criteria.

Completion of the TASK’s in this assignment can be approached in several ways, such as:

Writing an account or assignment.

Responding to a scenario looking at a range of organisations and the approaches/styles of leaders/managers within them.

Writing a report based on the principles of leadership and management and the factors impacting the styles/approaches adopted by managers/leaders.

Drawing upon your own experience of managing and leading individuals and teams within your own organisation. You may present work-based evidence accompanied by reports/reflective accounts to meet each assessment criterion.

TASKS

TASK 1 – 1.1, 1.2

The ability to understand the role and purpose of teams is essential if they are to be managed effectively. In your own words, define the purpose of teams within organisations.

Once you have defined the purpose of a team, explain the types of teams that occur in an organisation e.g. permanent, functional, matrix, virtual and so on.

TASK 2 – 1.3, 1.4

There are definitions used to describe team roles and team dynamics; these make a team unique.

Part 1: You are required to summarise the roles in a team using a recognised theory such as Belbin Team Roles (1993), or Honey Five Team Roles (2001).

Part 2: You are required to explain how members of a team affect team dynamics. Consider; personalities e.g. Myers Briggs model, working relationships, performance, skills, knowledge, seniority, roles.

TASK 3 – 1.5, 2.1, 2.2

Good characteristics and positive behaviours are essential for a team’s success.

Part 1: Outline five characteristics of high performing teams.

Part 2: Discuss behaviours which can be observed in a high performing team.

Part 3: Using your own example, write an account which identifies the advantages and disadvantages of team working and lone working.

TASK 4 – 3.1

Once you understand what a successful team looks look like, think about the different styles of leadership, and identify advantages and disadvantages of leadership styles that can be used to manage a high performing team.

Consider your knowledge of Hersey and Blanchard Situational Leadership (1969), Tannenbaum & Schmidt Leadership Continuum (1958), Lewin Styles of Leadership (1939), Adair Action Centred Leadership (1973) within your response.

TASK 5 – 3.2

The way that you communicate to remote and onsite teams requires you to understand appropriate forms of what type it is and how best to share it. This may include, written:

letters, memos, reports, newsletters, noticeboards; verbal: telephone calls, video conferencing, briefings and meetings, presentations; digital: intranet, emails, blogs, instant messaging, discussion forums, posts on social media sites, web chat, avatars, skype, electronic forms, apps, podcasts and webinars. Consider models such as, Shannon and Weaver and Schramm.

You are required to assess communication methods used for different types of teams.

TASK 6 – 3.3

Knowing what motivates your team on an individual basis will help you sustain a happy team. You are required to explain how to motivate a team to achieve results.

TASK 7 – 4.1, 4.2

A key role of the manager is to be able to recognise, respond proactively and overcome challenges. You are required to respond to this task by explaining:

Part 1: The challenges of managing a team.

Part 2: How you would respond to managing challenges proactively.

TASK 8 – 4.3

People are going to be absent from work for varying reasons. It is your role to ensure that staff are managed and supported, as necessary.

You are required to outline approaches to absence management.

TASK 9 – 5.1, 5.2

When managing your team, you will be keen to ensure that everyone is working towards a shared a purpose, that you share work fairly and support and develop others to achieve their potential and maintain performances levels. Please structure your response as follows:

Part 1: Outline approaches to ensure team members work to a shared purpose; consider the way you set goals for your team, communicate, get buy-in, and enthuse your team.

Part 2: Once your team are aware of their goals and you have communicated effectively, now explain how you would allocate work to team members so that they are aware of what is expected of them.

TASK 10 – 5.3, 5.4

Once you allocated work to team members, you need to ensure you are monitoring progress and performance. You are required to identify methods of monitoring team performance and then expand your response by explaining how to provide feedback on that performance, on both an individual and team basis.
