INTRODUCING ASSESSMENT
Being equipped with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to manage and lead in a variety of organisational settings is essential if an individual and their organisation are to succeed.
Assessment brief CMI 701 has been designed to enable learners to evidence their understanding of how the organisational context influences management and leadership practice. Leaders will reflect on theoretical concepts and contemporary thinking which can be used to inform approaches to working practice. Vitally, they will consider the knowledge, skills, values, and beliefs which can transform management and leadership practice.
Command Verb Definitions:
Critically Appraise: As with appraise, a systematic process used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of information in order to assess the usefulness and validity. Critically reflect: As with reflect, but identifying, questioning, and assessing deeply held beliefs and assumptions about a topic, the way in which we perceive events and issues, beliefs, feelings, and actions.
Guideline word count
The written word, however generated and recorded, is still expected to form most of the assessable work produced by Learners at Level 7. The amount and volume of work for this unit should be broadly comparable to a word count
of 4000 – 4500 words within a margin of +/-10%. The excessive use of word count is not grounds for referral, however the CMI reserve the right to return work to the Centre for editing and resubmission by the Learner.
The following are not included in the word count, if used and not required by the assessment brief an introduction to a job role, organisation or department, index or contents pages, headings and subheadings, diagrams, charts and
graphs, reference list or bibliography, reflective statement drawn from undertaking the assessment and how this has impacted on the learners’ work.

1.1 Critically appraise the impact of organisational context on strategic leadership

Give in-depth insight into the context within which your Organisation exists: include purpose, structure, legal status, and type.
Strategic Context Provide insights into the external and internal environment. You may refer to STEEPLE, VMV, SWOT, 7 S, Culture Web frameworks as part of your analysis of the context.
Impact on Strategic Leadership Critically Appraise the impact the organisation’s context has on the following:
• Leadership structures, levels of leadership responsibilities, autonomy accountability, and direction
• Leadership culture and ethics
• Leaders approach to managing stakeholder expectations, Leaders’ ability to manage change and innovation.
1.2 Critically appraise the role of the strategic leader to set and realise organisational goals.

Setting Organisational Goals
The role the organisation’s leadership (leader) takes in setting organisational goals and how the leaders define, shape, agree and communicate the organisations’ purpose, vision, mission, values, and strategic priorities.
Realising Organisational Goals
What leadership practices and processes are used to ensure its strategic direction, goals, and objectives are realised by teams, individuals, and the overall organisation.
2.1 Critically appraise the leadership behaviours and skills required to deliver strategic goals Identify two different occupational roles within your selected organisation and for each role critically appraise relevant leadership behaviours / skills using the following headings:
Role Definition
Provide an insight into the overall role including key accountabilities and responsibilities for delivering strategic goals.
Appraisal of skills and behaviours
For each role choose three leadership behaviours / skills to appraise how they can be allied to deliver strategic goals in the role. You can choose relevant behaviours from the following frameworks covered in the unit. You can apply the same three to each role or choose different ones if more relevant to that role.

Using one Reflective Practice framework reflect on your own learning and conclusions about your potential, strengths, and development areas and note what you can do to continue developing yourself as a strategic leader.
